چکیده

In this paper, a scheduling problem is considered which arises in the packaging industry. Plastic and foil wrappers used for packaging candy bars, crisps and other snacks typically require overlay printing with multiple colours. Printing machines used for this purpose usually accommodate a small number of colours which are loaded into a magazine simultaneously. If two consecutively scheduled print jobs require significantly different colour overlays, then substantial down times are incurred during the transition from the former magazine colour configuration to the latter, because ink cartridges corresponding to colours not required for the latter job have to be cleaned after completion of the former job. The durations of these down times are therefore sequence dependent (the washing and refilling time is a function of the number of colours in which two consecutive printing jobs differ). It is consequently desirable to schedule print jobs so that the accumulated down times associated with all magazine colour transitions are as short as possible for each printing machine. We show that an instance of this scheduling problem can be modelled as the well-known tool switching problem, which is tractable for small instances only. The problem can, however, be solved rather effectively A. P. Burger · C. G. Jacobs · S. E. We solve the colour print scheduling problem both exactly and heuristically for small, randomly generated test problem instances, studying the trade-off between the time efficiency and solution quality of the two approaches. Finally, we apply both solution approaches to real problem data obtained from a printing company in the South African Western Cape as a special case study.

Multi-Objective Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling with Sequence-Dependent Setup Times and Precedence Constraints

This paper presents a novel, multi-objective model of a parallel machines scheduling problem that minimizes the number of tardy jobs and total completion time of all jobs. In this model, machines are considered as unrelated parallel units with different speeds. In addition, there is some precedence, relating the jobs with non-identical due dates and their ready times. Sequence-dependent setup t...

Minimizing the total tardiness and makespan in an open shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times

We consider an open shop scheduling problem with setup and processing times separately such that not only the setup times are dependent on the machines, but also they are dependent on the sequence of jobs that should be processed on a machine. A novel bi-objective mathematical programming is designed in order to minimize the total tardiness and the makespan. Among several mult...

A New Multi-objective Job Shop Scheduling with Setup Times Using a Hybrid Genetic Algorithm

This paper  presents a new multi objective job shop scheduling with sequence-dependent setup times. The objectives are to minimize the makespan and sum of the earliness and tardiness of jobs in a time window. A mixed integer programming model is developed for the given problem that belongs to NP-hard class. In this case, traditional approaches cannot reach to an optimal solution in a reasonable...

A Multi-objective Immune System for a New Bi-objective Permutation Flowshop Problem with Sequence-dependent Setup Times

We present a new mathematical model for a permutation flowshop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times considering minimization of two objectives, namely makespan and weighted mean total earliness/tardiness. Only small-sized problems with up to 20 jobs can be solved by the proposed integer programming approach. Thus, an effective multi-objective immune system (MOIS) is ...

A fuzzy multi-objective linear programming approach for solving a new multi-objective job shop scheduling with sequence-dependent setup times

This paper presents a new mathematical model for a bi-objective job shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times that minimizes the weighted mean completion time and the weighted mean tardiness time. For solving this multi-objective model, we develop a fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) model. In this problem, a proposed FMOLP method is applied with respect to the o...
